Australia Public Data

Official Australian statistics, open government data and federal contracts in Claude: ABS, data.gov.au and AusTender.

Three official Australian Government sources in one connector. ABS statistics: the latest inflation, unemployment, GDP, population, wage, house price, building approval, household spending and trade figures, plus any of the roughly 1,200 tables in the ABS Data API with filters by state, industry or category. data.gov.au: search about 140,000 open datasets from federal, state and local agencies, see their licence and files, and read the first rows of a CSV or JSON file. AusTender: search Commonwealth contract notices by agency, supplier name or ABN, category and value, open one with its amendments, and total spend by supplier, agency or category. Public data fetched live on every call; no credentials needed.

Requirements

FAQ

Where does the data come from?

From three official, keyless APIs: the Australian Bureau of Statistics Data API (data.api.abs.gov.au, CC BY 4.0), the data.gov.au CKAN API (each dataset has its own licence, shown in every answer) and the AusTender OCDS API of the Department of Finance (api.tenders.gov.au, CC BY 3.0 AU). The connector is an independent client, not affiliated with the Australian Government.

Can I use the data commercially?

ABS statistics (CC BY 4.0) and AusTender contract notices (CC BY 3.0 AU) allow commercial reuse with attribution. data.gov.au datasets carry their own licence: most are Creative Commons Attribution, but some are non-commercial, restricted or unspecified. The connector flags each one (commercial reuse allowed / not allowed / check terms).

Are open tenders (approaches to market) included?

No. AusTender's public API only publishes awarded contract notices (A$10,000 and above), and the tender listings on tenders.gov.au and the state portals are not available through any keyless API. Use the contract search to see who wins what, by agency and category.

How far back can contract searches go?

Any period of up to 366 days. AusTender has no server-side search, so the connector reads the notices of the period page by page, newest first: up to about two weeks per search and two months per summary. When a period is longer than that, the answer says exactly which days were fully covered.

How are file previews handled?

Files in the data.gov.au DataStore are read through its API, with optional text search. Other CSV files are streamed and reading stops as soon as the requested rows arrive; JSON and GeoJSON files are read up to 5 MB. XLSX, ZIP, PDF and map services are not read. Nothing is stored or cached.
