Canada Public Data

Canada's official statistics, open data portal and federal contracts and tenders, in English or French.

Reads three official Government of Canada sources live. Statistics Canada: search its ~8,000 tables, see their dimensions, pull any series by period or last N values, and get a dashboard of headline indicators (CPI and core inflation, unemployment, jobs, wages, GDP, population, new housing prices, housing starts, retail sales, trade balance, the Bank of Canada rate and USD/CAD). The open.canada.ca portal: search ~45,000 federal, provincial and municipal datasets and preview the first rows of CSV, JSON and DataStore resources. Public procurement: search the proactive disclosure of federal contracts over $10,000 by supplier, department, commodity, date and value, total spend per supplier or department, and search open CanadaBuys tenders and award notices. No credentials needed; nothing is stored.

Requirements

FAQ

Where does the data come from?

From three official, keyless Government of Canada sources, queried live on every call: the Statistics Canada Web Data Service, the open.canada.ca CKAN API (including the proactive disclosure of contracts over $10,000 in its DataStore) and the CanadaBuys open-data files of tender and award notices. The connector is an independent client, not affiliated with the Government of Canada.

Can I use the data commercially?

Yes. Statistics Canada data is published under the Statistics Canada Open Licence, and open.canada.ca and CanadaBuys data under the Open Government Licence - Canada; both allow commercial reuse with attribution. Some provincial or municipal datasets on the portal carry their own licence, shown by cagov_get_dataset.

Which contracts are covered?

The proactive disclosure covers contracts and amendments over $10,000 reported quarterly by federal departments and agencies (not provinces, municipalities or most Crown corporations). CanadaBuys covers federal tender and award notices since 2022. Supplier business numbers are not published in these datasets, so suppliers are searched by name.

How are spend totals calculated?

From the reported contract values, which include amendments and taxes. Each contract counts once at its latest reported value, so amendments are not double counted. A summary reads up to 20,000 records newest first and says when the period was not fully covered.

Can I query in French?

Yes. Table, dataset, tender and contract searches accept French or English words, and every tool can answer with French titles and labels (language='fr').

Is anything stored?

No. Large files are streamed and only the rows needed are read; nothing is cached, logged or stored between calls.
