EU Open Data Portal

Every European open data portal in one search: find datasets from all EU countries and peek inside the files.

Searches data.europa.eu, the official EU portal that harvests the open data catalogues of every member state (dados.gov.pt, data.gouv.fr, datos.gob.es, GovData and about 200 more national, regional and city portals) plus the EU institutions: about 1.8 million datasets. Search in any EU language and filter by country, portal, publisher, file format, EU data theme and modification date; get a dataset with all its files, licences and download links; see what exists per country or theme; and preview the first rows of CSV and JSON files without downloading them yourself. Titles come back in your language where the portal has a translation. No credentials needed.

FAQ

What is data.europa.eu?

The official open data portal of the European Union, run by the Publications Office. It harvests the metadata of the national open data portals of all EU member states (and several EEA and candidate countries), many regional and city portals, geodata catalogues and the EU institutions and agencies, so one search covers them all. The files themselves stay on the publishers' servers.

Can I search in Portuguese, French or German?

Yes. Keywords work in any EU language. The portal machine-translates most titles and descriptions, so you can ask for results in your language; the connector falls back to English and then to the original language, and tells you when a title is in another language or machine-translated.

How does the file preview work, and what are its limits?

The connector downloads the start of the file from the publisher's server, reads only what it needs and returns the first rows and columns (up to 100 rows and 50 columns). CSV and TSV are streamed, so even very large files work: reading stops after the requested rows or 2 MB. JSON and GeoJSON must be read whole and are limited to 5 MB. Excel, ZIP, PDF, XML, shapefiles and map services cannot be previewed; you get the download link instead. Nothing is stored.

Why do some searches stop at 10,000 results?

The portal's search index only pages through the first 10,000 results of a query. Add filters (country, portal, format, theme or dates) to narrow it down; use the counts tool to see where the data is.

Is this an official EU service?

The data comes straight from the public data.europa.eu API. The connector is an independent client with no affiliation to the European Union or the Publications Office. Each dataset keeps the licence set by its publisher, shown with every file.

Why does a dataset show no themes?

Themes (EU data themes such as transport or environment) are set by the source portal. Some portals, Portugal's for example, do not tag them; filter by keywords, publisher or format instead.
