USA Public Data

Official US statistics, the Data.gov catalog and federal contracts and tenders in Claude.

Brings the main public data of the US federal government together. Statistics: CPI and PCE inflation, payrolls, unemployment, wages, job openings, GDP, saving and population (BLS and BEA), FHFA house prices, and Census tables such as median household income by state (with a free Census key). Open data: search the Data.gov catalog of about 400,000 federal, state and city datasets and preview the first rows of CSV and JSON files. Procurement: federal contract and grant awards and spending from USAspending.gov (by agency, supplier or UEI, NAICS/PSC, dates and amounts, with top-supplier summaries), open funding opportunities from Grants.gov and, with a free SAM.gov key, open contract solicitations. Accepts queries in English and Spanish. Nothing is cached or stored.

Requirements

FAQ

Do I need any API key?

Not for most things: BLS, BEA, FHFA, Data.gov, USAspending and Grants.gov work without keys. Census data tables need a free Census key (the Census API stopped answering keyless data requests in 2026), and SAM.gov contract solicitations need a free SAM.gov public API key. A free BLS key raises BLS limits; without it BLS allows 25 queries per day per network address, shared with other users of the same cloud.

Can I use the data commercially?

Yes. Data produced by US federal agencies (BLS, BEA, Census, FHFA, USAspending, SAM.gov, Grants.gov) is in the public domain. The Census Bureau asks apps to state that they use the Census Data API without being endorsed or certified by it, which the connector does. Each Data.gov dataset states its own licence (shown in the results); state and city datasets may use licences such as ODbL.

Why is FRED not included?

FRED's terms forbid use with AI and caching, so the connector reads the original agencies instead: BLS for prices and jobs, BEA for GDP and income, FHFA for house prices and the Census Bureau.

Can it read big files?

CSV previews are streamed and stopped as soon as the requested rows are read (at most 2 MB), so multi-gigabyte files are fine. JSON cannot be read partially, so JSON files above 5 MB are refused with a hint to use the CSV resource. Nothing is cached or stored between requests.

Why can a contract search take a while?

USAspending answers most searches in a second but broad keyword searches over long periods can take up to a minute, and it stops queries after about 60 seconds. Narrow the period or add an agency, NAICS code or supplier; repeating the same search is usually fast.
